PICNIC at HANGING ROCK
Adapted by Tom Wright from the novel by Joan Lindsay.
Directed by Matthew Woods
Presented by imaginary beasts
The beasts are proud to present the regional premiere by a fringe company of a thrilling new adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s much-loved novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock. Written by Tom Wright, this enigmatic take on the Australian classic examines our imaginative longings and fears while weaving a chilling tale of repressed emotions and simmering violence. On St. Valentine’s Day, in the year 1900, a group of students from a girl’s finishing school set out to visit the geological marvel known as Hanging Rock.
Three of the party never return. Their disappearance — and its ultimate unsolvability — has a peculiar, even devastating, effect on those who are left behind. Told from the perspective of a chorus of school girls who gather to re-enact and make sense of the story, Picnic at Hanging Rock takes a potent, poetic peek at what lies beneath.
Performed by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.
